Zongshan castle was built in 967 and is the most perfectly protected castle in Tibet. Zong means castle and garrison in Tibetan language, once it is also the name of Tibetan county administration organization.
100 years ago, Gyangze people struggled against the British invasion in Zongshan Mountain with the simple arms and after three days and nights' battle they jumped off the cliff to die for our country. Though a century has passed, the gunfire of anti-British battle is still reechoed in the valley.
In 1961, Gyangze Zongshan Anti-British Site was listed to be one of the National First Level Cultural Relic Protection Units by the state and in 1994 it was ranked as one of the Teenager's Patriotic Educational Bases.
